About Charlestown

Our South Beach Community

The south shore of Rhode Island features something for everyone. Wonderful beaches, outstanding boating, hiking, fishing, surfing, wind surfing, nature walks, kayaking, golf, and tennis are just a few of the outside activities available to our visitors.

The south shore is a continuous string of barrier beaches, behind which are a series of nine salt ponds. All provide a setting for outdoor activities for all four seasons. Beaches along southern Rhode Island range from large scale public beaches to remote isolated stretches of barrier beach. Beaches to the east, Matunuck and Charlestown are accessed by both state and town beaches. Areas of Green Hill, Quonochontaug, Shady Harbor, Shelter Harbor, Weekapaug, and Watch Hill contain private beaches which are owned and operated by member associations and fire districts. Much of the southern shore is held by the public trust in various conservation agencies, private, state and federal. These include the Trustum and Ninigret National Wildlife Refuges which includes the Ninigret Conservation Area, commonly referred to as East Beach. Napatree Point and Quonochontaug/Weekapaug barrier beach are owned and supported by private associations. The towns of South Kingstown, Charlestown and Westerly operate public beaches within their respective towns, which provide parking handicap access and life guards, as well as the state beaches at East Matunuck and Misquamicut.

Water sport activities are also abundant throughout South County. Boating facilities range from full service marine facilities in Point Judith and Watch Hill, to many small marinas and boat landings in the ponds. Larger boats are best served there. The other salt ponds are moderately shallow with tricky breachways. Moorings are regulated by town harbor masters, and are available to property owners. Some of the pond front neighborhoods have community access varying from simple right-of-ways to community docks. Several private yacht clubs are located along the pond communities. Launching ramps are available in each pond ranging from private access to marina facilities to state facilities.

The ponds, as well as Block Island Sound, provide limitless fishing possibilities for all seasons. Charter fishing is available at both Point Judith and Watch Hill. Rhode Island does not require a salt water fishing license for recreational anglers, however, a non-resident shellfishing license is required. A non-resident property owner license is also available. Fresh water fishing also requires a license. The state provides an abstract of marine and fresh water laws, available at tourist centers, marinas and sporting goods stores. The most popular fishing is done seasonally for tuna, striped bass, bluefish, fluke, tautog and cod. Bay quahogs, oysters (in season), mussels and steamer clams are plentiful. The harvest of scallops, lobsters, and blue crabs is reserved for residents.

The sheltered salt ponds, coves and tributaries provide a wonderful setting for canoeists and kayakers ranging from calm waters to white water and surf conditions. Rentals are available. The area provides a mecca for windsurfers both on the ocean side and ponds. The Ninigret Conservation Area is the most popular -- even in the winter.

For the bird and hiking enthusiasts, South County offers unlimited opportunity. Southern Rhode Island is part of the Atlantic Flyway and a popular birding spot. Hundreds of salt marshes and conservation areas provide visual access opportunities. Many miles of trails are available at Burlingame Park, Ninigret Wildlife and Trustom Refuges.

If golf and tennis are your thing, there are eight public and private golf courses within a fifteen minute drive and many outdoor and indoor tennis courts.
